History of Chambers Cottage

Chambers Cottage was built in 1898 by a northern merchant. The narrow Victorian style is typical of a Northern Victorian. During World War II, the home was divided into two apartments. Many La Fayette people have stories to tell of family members living in the house. In 1991, attorney Calvin Milford purchased the residence and renovated it, establishing his law practice under its roof.

In 2007, Martha and Bob Gatlin purchased the house from Mr. Milford. Sensing a need for lodging in the historical district of La Fayette, they decided to open a guest house.

“It is our pleasure to share the beauty of this Victorian house and a by-gone era with you, your family and friends. It is our prayer that you will enjoy your visit at Chambers Cottage.” —Martha & Bob

History of Chambers County, Alabama

In 1832, prior to the influx of white intruders, the area now known as Chambers County was part of the Indian Nation. Some 842 members of the Muskogean Confederacy inhabited the area in four major villages.

Chambers County was created December 18, 1832 from these Indian lands. The name “Chambers” came from a distinguished citizen of North Alabama. Dr. Henry Chambers was one of the first men from Alabama elected to the US Senate.
